The Top 10 Reasons to “Vote No” to Save the Trinity
October 15, 2007
By voting NO to SAVE THE TRINITY, the vision approved in 1998 – including flood control, lakes, recreational areas, and transportation improvements – will become a reality. The money approved in the 1998 bond election will be combined with toll income and federal, state and private dollars to create a 10,000-acre park with lakes, trails, athletic fields and an equestrian center.
Here are the Top 10 reasons to VOTE NO against the Trinity Parkway referendum on November 6:
1. Vote NO so that the Trinity Project, as approved by the voters in 1998, can move forward and deliver flood protection, lakes, parks, recreational areas, and transportation improvements.
2. If passed, the Trinity Parkway referendum would have devastating consequences for Dallas. A Vote No will say:
- NO to unneeded tax increases
- NO to losing millions in state and federal money
- NO to gridlock, traffic congestion and poor air quality
- NO to years of delay
- NO to losing economic development, jobs and tax base
3. Dallas voters ALREADY approved the Trinity River Project back in 1998 … the City needs to continue its work to complete the project as it was approved nearly a decade ago.
4. The current design of the Trinity Parkway toll road will help get traffic moving near downtown Dallas … and it will improve air quality since fewer cars will be stuck in traffic.
5. Many other options for the Parkway have been studied … and this is the MOST COST EFFECTIVE and the LEAST DISRUPTIVE to the community!
6. Taxpayers will get maximum value for their investment … because tolls, federal and state dollars will be used to pay for 90% of the Trinity Parkway’s cost.
7. Dallas’ economy will get a big boost! The Trinity River Corridor Project will expand our tax base, create 36,000 permanent jobs … and spur economic development efforts in the southern sector. Dallas’ tax base will increase. Plans are already underway for numerous multi-use developments … that will bring retail, office complexes and housing to the surrounding area.
8. It has taken us almost 10 YEARS to get this far. A redesign of the Trinity Parkway will add at least 5 more years to the completion date.
9. The Trinity Parkway will be designed to be compatible with a park. The Park is approximately five football fields wide and the Parkway will take up the area from the 40 yard line to the goal of one of those fields (120 feet). The NTTA and TxDOT confirm it will be designed to the same level of excellence as North Central Expressway – and the NTTA is planning to spend $1 million per mile for landscaping – TWICE the amount allotted for the President George Bush Turnpike.
10. Remember:
- Voting NO is the best for Dallas!
- Tom Leppert and former Mayors Laura Miller and Ron Kirk are voting NO.
- 14 Dallas City Council members are voting NO.
- A dozen chambers and civic groups are voting NO.
- Also voting NO are Senator Royce West, Senator John Carona, Representative Dan Branch, Representative Barbara Mallory Caraway, Representative Yvonne Davis and Representative Will Hartnett.
- Please VOTE NO – it’s the right thing to do to keep our city moving forward.
