State Park Improvement Plan Goes To Voters
October 24, 2007
Next month, Texas voters will decide whether or not to amend the state’s constitution. A total of 16 propositions are on the ballot.
Proposition 4 is a $1 billion plan to improve and maintain state parks, such as Cedar Hill State Park. Located in Dallas County, the park would receive several million dollars if the proposition is approved by voters.
Phil Feinberg recently retired and bought a new RV. He said that Cedar Hill State Park desperately needs wastewater lines for its campsites. “To have to pull this thing out, especially with the difficulty I’ve had driving it, and to go to a dump station to dump it,” he said, “if we were going to have to stay here a week or two versus having a sewer connection right here, would just be a tremendous improvement.”

Best Southwest Cities Adopt Resolutions Backing Trinity Toll Road
October 24, 2007
The city councils of Cedar Hill, DeSoto, Duncanville and Lancaster – collectively known as the Best Southwest Cities – recently adopted resolutions supporting the proposed Trinity Parkway in Dallas.
Cedar Hill’s and DeSoto’s resolutions directly encourage Dallas voters to defeat Proposition 1 on the Nov. 6 ballot, which calls for blocking construction of a high-speed toll road inside the Trinity River levees.
Officials with the cities say that killing the toll road, which is designed to relieve traffic congestion around downtown Dallas, would jeopardize southern sector projects, such as reconstructing the Mixmaster and widening south Interstate 35E and U.S. Highway 67. Three of the resolutions passed unanimously.
The Duncanville council split 4-3, with the minority saying the city shouldn’t campaign in another jurisdiction’s election. The cities sent their resolutions, which carry no legal weight, to Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert last week.

The Top 10 Reasons to “Vote No” to Save the Trinity
October 15, 2007
By voting NO to SAVE THE TRINITY, the vision approved in 1998 – including flood control, lakes, recreational areas, and transportation improvements – will become a reality. The money approved in the 1998 bond election will be combined with toll income and federal, state and private dollars to create a 10,000-acre park with lakes, trails, athletic fields and an equestrian center.
Here are the Top 10 reasons to VOTE NO against the Trinity Parkway referendum on November 6:
1. Vote NO so that the Trinity Project, as approved by the voters in 1998, can move forward and deliver flood protection, lakes, parks, recreational areas, and transportation improvements. Read more
Lamar Comes Up Short When It Counts Against Cedar Hill
October 13, 2007
Cedar Hill won its football game against Arlington Lamar Friday night:
Cedar Hill quarterback James Hamilton had a game-high 146 yards rushing on 17 carries.
It looked as if Lamar was going to score in the final minute. After starting on Cedar Hill’s 33 with 2:04 left, Lamar marched to the 3 on a 22-yard pass from Sherrard to Kyle Arnsberg. But after two incomplete passes, Sherrard came up two yards short on the final play.

3 Cities Weigh Options For Cedar Hill Animal Shelter’s Future
October 12, 2007
At the last City Council meeting, we were briefed on different options for addressing the shortcomings of our current animal shelter.
Before drafting plans, Quorum assessed the shelter based on professional analysis as well as comment from staff and residents. The firm initially recommended tripling the shelter’s size, at a cost of $4.14 million, but city officials balked at the price. All four designs cut the first proposal’s space and cost by nearly half.

Cedar Hill High Teacher Wins Milken Foundation Award
October 9, 2007
It was the surprise of a lifetime.
Cedar Hill High School teacher Melanie Chambers learned Tuesday she was the recipient of the prestigious Milken Foundation Educator award.
In the packed Performing Arts Center at the Cedar Hill High School, Chambers received a $25,000 cash prize presented by Robert Scott, the acting commission of education.
School, city and state officials were on hand.
“This feels like a dream,” said Ms. Chambers, a lead math teacher who is in her 10th year at the school.
The awards are given to teachers across the nation each year to recognize and encourage effective educators, said Lowell Milken, the foundation’s chairman, in an interview after the assembly.
The winners are instructional leaders who motivate students, powerful mentors who make other teachers better, and people who are involved in their community, Mr. Milken said.

OSU’s Cole To Play Receiver
October 8, 2007
Dallas Morning News just posted an article about William Cole, the amazing QB from Cedar Hill’s State Championship team:
A new role for freshman William Cole was unveiled in the fourth quarter against Sam Houston State when the high school standout from Cedar Hill lined up at receiver and made his first career reception – an 8-yarder from backup quarterback Bobby Reid.Cole (6-0, 175) started out as a defensive back but made the switch in the middle of last week to shore up depth at receiver. He played both positions and quarterback at Cedar Hill.’We felt he could help us a little bit quicker probably as a wide receiver,’ defensive coordinator Tim Beckman said. ‘We thought that he might be able to catch the ball and make a play in space because he’s a great athlete. And we also knew that William wanted to get on the field.’As a senior, Cole ran for nearly 2,900 yards and passed for more than 1,600 yards as Cedar Hill won the Class 5A state title.”

Dillard’s Moving to Cedar Hill
October 8, 2007
CBS 11 has a story about Dillard closing its store in Southwest Center (Red Bird) Mall and moving to Cedar Hill. Needless to say, some of the other Southwest Center tenants are not pleased with the move:
Finis Melton, who owns a shoe store near Dillard’s, says the half empty mall is already hurting business.
“We want to add to it to make it grow,” said Melton, who owns J. Renee Shoes. “Every time somebody leaves, it makes our business harder.”
The store is moving to Cedar Hill, and some are concerned that the southern sector won’t be served during the holidays, a retailer’s most profitable season.
“That’s when shopping goes up, the market goes up. They make more of their profits during those holidays,” said Dallas City Councilman Tennell Atkins. “It’s a slap in the face to the community.”

Cedar Hill Microchip Rule Aims To Reduce Lost Pets
October 7, 2007
An interesting article about some of the new changes we are making at our Animal Shelter. These changes are in response to the growing desire among residents to increased animal control.
From now on, if Fido gets caught roaming in Cedar Hill, Duncanville or DeSoto, he’ll be required to carry ID – between his shoulder blades.
The Tri-City Animal Shelter, which serves the three cities, on Monday joined the growing trend of requiring impounded animals to have identifying microchips implanted before owners can reclaim them.

DeSoto Eases Sting of ‘06 Losses to Cedar Hill
October 6, 2007
Cedar Hill lost the Battle of Belt Line this weekend by a score of 37-30.
DeSoto beat its neighbor by an average of 27 points from 2000-04, so the “Battle of Belt Line” wasn’t really a battle until Cedar Hill won in 2005. The rivalry intensified last year, when Cedar Hill beat DeSoto twice, including a sound whipping in the playoffs.
…
But Friday night, it again became the big brother.
